Spectrum Social Skills Solutions is offering seminars that will help children and young adults develop the social skills that they need in order to excel in everyday life.

What are social skills? Social skills are our tools for understanding and interacting with the world around us, which then leads to a better understanding of ourselves and our surroundings.  Social skills allow us to express ourselves appropriately and connect well with others. Without these necessary tools, parents/teachers may notice that a child is exhibiting any one of the following: behavioral difficulties in school, delinquency, bullying, difficulty in making friends, low self-esteem, aggressiveness, problems in interpersonal relationships, isolation from peers, anxiety, and depression.

The good news is that social skills can be learned ! By focusing on your child's strengths, our trained and dedicated staff, will help your child in the following areas: improvement in your child's self-esteem, improvement in their relationships with peers/family members, academic success, interest in new hobbies, a better understanding of themselves and their environment, better coping strategies in the face of future stressful events, and a positive and safe school environment.

What Are Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) ?   All these disorders are characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interactions, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Autism Spectrum Disorders, range from a severe form, called Autistic Disorder, to a milder form known as Aspergers Disorder. Autism Spectrum Disorders symptoms related to Social Skills can include:

• Not making eye contact and wanting to be alone
• Trouble understanding other people's feelings or talking about their own feelings
• Not wanting to be held or cuddled, or only cuddling when they want to
• Not noticing when other people try to talk to them
• Being very interested in people, but not knowing how to talk, play, or relate to them.
• Not interacting with others the way most people do, or not being interested in other people at all.

What is Aspergers Disorder?  Aspergers Disorder is the term for a specific type of Autistic Spectrum Disorders which is characterized by problems in development of social skills and behavior. Unlike children with autism, children with Aspergers retain their early language skills. Most children with Aspergers Disorder have difficulty interacting with their peers. They tend to be loners and may display eccentric behaviors. Aspergers Disorder (AS) is a disorder that is often characterized by a child's obsessive interest in a single object or topic to the exclusion of any other. A child with Aspergers, for example, may spend hours each day preoccupied with counting cars passing on the street or watching only the weather channel on television. Coordination difficulties are also common with this disorder. These children often have special educational needs.
